A friend of mine has a giant Colt Coral. He said I could have a piece but neither he or I have any idea on how to split it. Does anyone know the proper way to take a piece off.
Thanks,
Doug

Sorry this sat here unanswered!
Fragging a colt is fairly easy. There are a couple of methods to use. First, easiest: use fishing line to secure a rock at the base of a branch. The colt will adhere to the rock, and you can use a sharp knife to remove the branch. Takes a few days for the coral to attach, and 'checking' often will slow the process, so just give it 2 weeks. Second, little more risk: use a sharp knife to remove the branch. Pierce the bottom with a toothpick, about a half inch above the cut. Use the toothpick to tie the colt to a rock. Third, totally easy, but requires patience; colts will split on their own, as will many softies. Waiting for this to happen and providing a small, stable rock for the 'baby' to crawl onto works--but can take a long time. ;)
I prefer the first method, since it means the coral is attached to a rock. The cut typically heals quickly as the colt re-orients itself on the rock.
