Converting a saltwater tank into freshwater (?)

Hey everyone,

This seemed like the right place to ask this question, so I'll shoot :)

I used to have a saltwater aquarium up and running, but things went south and I lost everything...all my fish, coral, etc. after 2 years. Now I would like to try my hand at a FRESHWATER aquarium, and want to use my current tank - which is set up for SALTWATER. Is this a possibility? I've thoroughly cleaned everything, so that should not be an issue.

Only thing is this: My tank is set up the following way: The tank takes 75 gallons. An outtake tube carries water OUT of the tank and into a separate "filter box". This box contains a protein skimmer, and some other filtration products. The filtered water is then brought back into the tank via an intake tube. BOTH TUBES connect to the tank via the BACK of the tank itself.

NOW - I am trying to figure out: Should I just remove the protein skimmer from the "filter box", and replace it with some OTHER form of filtration system? OR should I remove the entire tubing system and plug the holes in the fiberglass on the back of the tank (with more fiberglass) and just add an "under-gravel" filtration system, or something of the sort?

ANY AND ALL HELP would be GREATLY appreciated!! Thanks so much for taking the time to read / help me out! :) Take care!

- Brett

PS - Any questions just let me know and I'll try to make things more clear! :)
