I have a fairly densely planted 15-gal aquarium which is home to 3 ottocinclus and 4 cherry barbs (2 male and 2 female). The cherry barbs were just purchased yesterday afternoon. I had noticed that the females were gravid, but assumed that the stress of adjusting to a new environment would keep my fish from spawning.

Imagine my surprise when I woke up this morning to see that the fish had paired off, staked out their own corners of the tank, and were busy spawning! After a few hours, I could see tons of tiny eggs stuck to various plants around the tank. Almost immediately, the fish began eating the most visible eggs, but there are still quite a few hidden away among plant roots and especially in my clump of ludwigia repens. Unable to help myself, I also moved a few eggs that would surely have been eaten (they were right out in the open) to a small clump of java moss. I then fed the fish some frozen bloodworms in the hopes of distracting them from eating the eggs.

My question is, is there any hope of fry, or is it impossible with the parents in the same tank? Even if the eggs are not eaten, won't the fry starve unless I provide them with special foods? I have no experience with breeding fish, so I'm not sure if it's realistic to hope a few fry make it, but it would certainly be a great surprise! :)

Congrats, cool isn't it. I have a heavily planted tank, and when I get busy it can become completely overgrown. I've pruned back plants a couple of times and found I have a new rosy barb, so it is possible that 1 or 2 might survive in a community tank. Unluckily, I've never made an all out of effort to separate the eggs, so having one or two survive is only going to happen intermittently. when I've discovered mine they are usually about a 1/4 of inch and I assume survive on the micro flora and fauna in my well established tank.

Good Luck.
