I have been looking around and seeing peoples set ups with fish, and I really have been doing some research, not on compatibility. I really want an active tank, maybe some slow movers, and I have a lot of fish that I have wrote down, as just ideas, I have recently saw and Ghost Knife, and would really like to have one of those. My idea with fish is also with colour, fish that are not only active but fun to look at! My list is small, and limited, please give me any input to as in what would be a good community tank for a 72g

Fishy List:
Green Terror
Jack Demspy
Black Convict
Dwarf Gourami
Discus
Una
Ghost Knife
Poly pteridae (sp? can't read my writing)
Oscar

Whatcha guys think?

A lot of those fish should be kept with other similar fish (discus). Not to mention a lot of the fish you wrote down get rather large and agressive (JD, GT, most oscars). Not exactly community fish, not in a 72gal at any rate.

You can't keep the BG knife with those cichlids. (aggressive) He is a gentle fellow and not compatible. He can reach 12 inches or more. I can't imagine discus with green terror and jack dempsy !!!! Now that's scary.

is there a good starting point to begin with? or what, how should I begin to pick and choose my fish?

Well, research each fish and decide what you want in your tank. All the fish you listed (minus a few) get big and agressive and wont make a good community tank. A few discus, although expensive, would look great as a community. They are very colorful and active, but wont be able to be grouped with oscars or JD, GT, or most of the other fish you listed

from there, if you click on cory cats, you can get to just about any community type... just see what you are looking for, i think ghost knifes are in community 5

Or....just get two oscars for your tank... they explode to tthe size of 1 foot in a year! They have personalities that are unique to each individual and they are VERY inquisitive. If you put your finger in the tank, they start ripping at it! At 15", my friend fed his oscar a mouse! They shouldn't get bigger than 13" or 15" AT MOST.....they are a very fun fish to consider!
