Hello, well let me start off by saying that I have finally gotten rid of all my ick awhile ago and today was the big day when I went and purchased 2 new fishys!! Everything was kosher in my tank and away we were going until I noticed one of my survivor platys hanging at the top, alone out of the small group of 4 that I have left. I watched him for abit and then I noticed his spine looked abit bent, He was eating fine and no external sign besides the sligh bent spine and the top and bottom fins clamped. I paniced and he is now in the Q tank awaiting help if possible. Everyone else seems fine in there now. The reason I am so jumpy is because the 2 blood parrots I bought today were fairly costly and I do not want a repeat of prior events, I would just like to enjoy my tank :( Any one know what is, or will be going on with this mess and can I fix it before the big blow out? Thanks.

hmm. I have noticed this on my killifish, except he is active still. Does your platy have a really fat stomach? I notice that after feeding sometimes, one of my killifish is pretty fat (he/she is fat even without food) and I notice that it has an arched spine. I was very concerned too but, it is very active and healthy. I think its just because he or she is a pig a lot of the time, I used to think that maybe it was a she and she was pregnant because it is a little bigger than the other one and of course fatter. My advice would be just to watch her, or he..if its a her, she could be pregnant. i dont know ive never really heard of a bent spine on any fish, but who knows. Im sorry if this isnt that helpful its just to give you some insight. Hopefully my post will bump it up in the forums and someone with more experience can help you out some more. Hope all goes well with the platy, never like to see fish die. good luck

Any other symptoms? Pale color, colapsed stomach? Watch him carfully and keep him in the Q tank.
post back with any updates

his color seems alright and he is eating, so its a mystery. He just is acting wierd one minute and then fine the other. His lethargic, and anti social behavior is what bothered me the most. This one has got me stumped. I guess he just has to stay all anone in the Q tank till I figure it out. Thanks.

its either TB, or neon tetra disease.
Or he's just weird, keep an eye on him for a while

Unfortunatly neon tetra disease isnt restricted to neons. TB is tuberculosis, which apparently fish can get as well. Just keep the water quality up and keep it in the Qtank
This is probably way off, but I thought I'd mention it... I asked on the boards about 'dwarf platys' not long ago, as I'd seen them at Petsmart. Someone mentioned that some platys are bred with arched backs to make them appear smaller, and then they label those "dwarf platys". Maybe this is what you have?

I will keep him the the q tank and see what happens, I am pretty sure he is just a regular old platy, but thanks for offering up help. Thanks again chunks and all who answered :p

I'm glad your platy is ok :D
I've got a tetra who has a bent spine - looking from the top down, she's got an 's' shape at her tail. She's definitely the alpha female of the tetras, chasing the others around, and has probably the brightest colouring of them.
If your platy is eating and acting normally, and can get around alright, he'll probably be just fine.

Somtimes they are just deformed but it does not manifest until they are older.... i see it all the time in platys and killifish. I dont think its anything to worry about.
