The first blue tetra only showed the bloated stomach symptom for a week or so. I never saw the pinecone effect on the scales. The second tetra went pinecone within a few days and died shortly after :sad. I did a 50% water change yesterday and plan on doing another 20% water change every 3-4 days (usually it's 20% every week). How long should I do it for? 2 weeks?
I think the drop in water temp from the weather change might have caused it. The light for the 100W heater (20 gal tank) is on more often nowadays. I have it set at 80F right now.

Anything else I should to besides the increase in frequency of water changes for n weeks?

edit: the blue tetras have been in the tank for almost 6 months.

its probably not dropsy if they dont have the pinecone scales. dropsy is more of a symptom of another illness or failure in the body than an actual illness itself. Your fish are bloated? it could be constipation or some other internal sickness/parasite. are they pooing normally? is there something unusual about the color of the pooh?
*edit* sorry i didnt read the part where your second guy had the pinecone symptom. dropsy comes normally from overfeeding and/or poor water, so cutting back on food might help*edit*
