I am thinking about taking a mag drive pump and pumping water up to a plant container with holes- a big one.

I was planning on putting a filter pad on the bottom of the container with bio media sandwhiched in between a filter pad on the top.

The water would trickle through and back down into my 150 gallon tank.

Would this work for a bio filter?

Thanks

This works for me on my 40g tank. I don't have a very large container (only a gallon) as I was experimenting with the idea and so I'm using an open pore ceramic for the media to get some surface area as I only have about 2 or 3 litres of it at the moment. Then a few layers of poly matting above that. I run just 600litres/h (150gph) through that and seems to be holding up well and keeping up with the bio load in the tank, which is not all that heavily stocked - about 25 tetra size fish.

To me this seems like a nice easy way of doing wet/dry - as long as you don't mind having a relatively large filter above the tank... Could be easily hidden tho... Since you don't have a sump it doesn't need to be as big as a normal sump setup...

I have no problems with this sitting on a shelf above the tank.

Thanks for letting me know it is working for you.

Historical note: Most of the original W/Ds were DIY, and the large majority of them were above the tank. It worked then and it still works.

you might be better off with something like a square rubbermaid totebox. put it on a shelf over the tank with a spout to flow back into the tank. search skippy pond filters on yahoo and you will get some more ideas of how to set it up and what to put into it.
