We have had Frank (my youngest named him) for about 2 months in a 2 gallon tank and unfortunately we found him this morning. We want to get another fish right away as my boys, 7 1/2 & 3 1/2 loved him. Should we get another goldfish or is there another one that is better? Not really wanting to get a bigger tank at this point but would when the fish gets bigger and out grows it.

Please help. I certainly don't want the boys, or me for that matter, to get attached again and loose our new friend.
Thanks so much for your help.

your goldfish died because goldfish need tanks 30 gallons to each goldfish.

The only thing that will fit in a 2 gallon is a betta or some ghost shrimp, or killifish.

30 Gallons! Oh my!

It sure was nice of the gal at The Aquarium store in Pleasant Hill, CA to tell me this. We got Frank for free due to a promotion for the Shark Tail movie. I have spent $60 on the poor fee fish and now he is gone.

What about a guppie? If I get a betta is there any special things to consider? We really want to get a fish today. I have already cleaned out the tank and it is all ready. My son wanted neon tetras but I am quite sure the tank is to small to keep enough of them in there to be happy.

Thanks for your help!!

bettas are great, resistant, adaptive and beautiful fish :)!
I brought one home about 2 months ago now, (he was in a cup), put him in a 1 gallon tank (not best place to keep one), and he did fine! no heater or anything, just treated water from my tap. he's now in a bigger tank of course, and very happy :). keep him in a temperature range of 70-80, with roughly a neutral ph and enjoy your beautiful new fish :)
with him in a 2 gal you'll want to do about a 50% water change once a week.

Thanks!

After reading the dougie's post, we are excited and going to get a betta!
Thanks to all of you and your help, we really, really appreciate it!!!

one thing you should know though if you dont already, is that they need to come up to the top of the tank breathe air as well every few minutes. (I didn't know this until i looked up about 20 sites in anticipation for bringing home my little betta). so you'll need some surface area...(of course it's pretty hard not to give a tank surface area but just so you know)
