OK, New Question: Does anybody know if fish, like many other aninals, cannot see red light? I'm curious because I would like to find a way to observe my nocturnal fish. I've noticed the Pleco will come out under a small red coated light I use at dusk and dawn times. Does he think it's dark?

Most fish can not see the red light. Some can--although all the ones I can think of right now are SW critters.

I'm not a biologist, but I'm guessing that fish evolved that way because red light is absorbed near the surface of the water, and doesn't go down very far?

Anyone want to second guess me?

50/50--depends on the individual fish. Reds don't go away until after about 10-15 feet, and there are a lot of FW fish that live within these depths, so I would guess that it is more a matter of them not needing to develop the ability to see in the red than not having the red light available to see. Many terrestrial animals don't see well in the red spectrum, and it's all around them.
