what are the symptoms on plants that are in too hard of water? my water test kit reads as 'medium hard', i was wondering if i should do anything about that if i am trying to grow plants.

FWIW I've never seen any problems in my setup due directly to hardness....FWIW

This is my water:

biogirl - What are the gH and kH of your water? 'Medium - Hard' means nothing to me.
Most plants will do fine in harder water, however. Let's see your numbers.

i don't have a test kit that breaks down all the components of hardness (i know, i know, but they are expensive). i have one that says my water is 120 ppm total hardness, 'medium hard'.
edited: also, the pH is around 8.5 if that helps at all.

the reason i ask is because i have an amazon sword and some dwarf sag and i read somewhere that they like soft water, and the sword isn't growing that well, it isn't dying and it has lots of roots but the leaves just seem very stunted. there are tons of new bright healthy leaves, but they won't grow taller than maybe 2 inches. i have a melon sword in the same tank that is doing much better but i read that they are okay with moderately hard water, so i wondered if that could be the problem. i have only had the dwarf sag for a week or so, too short a time to know how it will do, but it is also suppose to like softer water according to a couple websites.

i guess i am mostly frusterated with the little amazon sword that won't get any taller. i have 2 wpg of CF light, i took out my diy co2 and started dosing excel instead, dose traces weekly, and had a jobe's stick under the plant for a while, gravel vac'd it out b/c it didn't seem to be helping and i was having too much algae. don't know what could be the matter with it, it looks fine, just short.
