Do different tetras school together?

I have 4 cardinal tetras in my tank now, I will be adding 2 more soon. Is it better to just get 2 more cardinal tetras, or can I get 2 tetras of a different type? I was thinking of getting 2 glowlight tetras or 2 silver tip tetras.

Some tetra mixes work out--others don't. If the fish are a similar size, they will frequently school together. JMO, but I think a school of just one species looks better than a mixed bag, no matter how the fish behave.

Specifically--I would avoid the silver tips. Pretty fish, but very nippy. I had 5 in my 40, and removed them because they bugged the heck out of the other fish. Since the adult size will be larger than the cardinals, they won't school once mature.

Ok, I'll stick with the cardinal tetras. I also noticed with just the 4, they nip at each other. Is this normal? Is this a result of not having enough to school?

Not really--its more about developing the hierarchy. Though it can be hard to identify, all schooling fish have a definite structure--those that are 'top' stay in the safer parts of the group. They'll constantly be working to maintain their rank or move up. Typically, with tetras this nipping isn't harmful.

If you can find some rummy-nosed tetras, they are pretty cool and the tend to hang together. And I second the opinion on the silver-tips. They do seem to nip at others and are a bother.

i have 4 neons and 4 glo-light tetras that school together beautifully! the glos and the neons stick together in the school (mostly) as well, which makes it even cooler. so it can be done.

neons, cardinals, glowlights and black neons seem to hang together. neons and cardinals look fine in a group. I also have some glass bloodfin tetra, but they are the sharks of the tank and don't get on with others as well. They espesially seem to dislike the guppies.

I have cardinals and glowlights and I used to have neons too. They school in with their own type in preference, but sometimes the schools join together especially if danger is sensed. You see it when you introduce a new fish of another species.

But usually they seperate into their own schools.

I read that Glo Light Tetras like a PH no greater than 7. Right now my Cardinal Tetras are in water with a PH of 7.5.

Would the Glo Light Tetras be ok with a PH of 7.5?

Would 2 Glo Lights be ok with 4 Cardinals, or do I need more?
