I have bought some plants that have a lead strip wrapped around their base to make them sink.

Is it safe to leave this metal on the plant when I root it in my substrate?

Or will the lead desolve and give my fish brain damage?

i'd remove it and cut of the leaves that were covered by it.

Yes they say it is safe. No, you should remove the lead. It tends to inhibate growth and the forming of a root structure. And some say it keeps the stems from getting good water circulation. Other than holding the plants down, it really is useless. I also take the plants out of pots that some come in.....gently.
