Hi all, quick question--

I have 4 guppies (3 male, 1 female), 1 panda cory cat (I know, I know, sets of 3, but I haven't been able to find more) and 3 Sunset Green Platies in a 10 g tank. Initially, things were fine, but I added 2 more sunset platies, and all of a sudden, one of the males got aggressive like nobody's business. So I removed the new platies, but it remains such that the remaining aggressive male is chasing off one of the original females. Things are fine at feeding, but otherwise, the chased female is hiding out in the corners! What could the cause be for this aggression, and how do I relieve it?

It's hard to say what might be going on in his fishy little brain...you had 2 males and 1 female, and you removed one of the males, is that right? Now the remaining male is chasing the female and causing her to hide all the time? Where did you put the other male? In another tank? Maybe keep the 2 males together in that tank and give Ms. Platy a rest for a while, then see if they still chase her when you return them to her tank. While you have the males separated from the rest, you might want to think about adding some more females. If there are more females than males, they won't be picking on one constantly. Alternatively, you could put the female platy in the other tank with the lone female guppy you have and give them both a vacation away from the guys. With livebearers, it's best to keep the ladies outnumbering the *ahem* gentlemen, just so they aren't being chased and harassed all the time.

You should have more females than males. 2 females for every male is what I have been suggested. I wouldn't any more fish though or your tank will be overstocked.
