i've got 2 tiger barbs that are scratching their scales against a rock. just a few times each. but i've noticed them doing it for a few days now.

no signs of ick...they and all the other fish look and act normal.

regular behaviour?...or something wrong with them?

Allan!

No, I am currently treating my tank for ich. I would advise you to do so as well. Signus hit the nail on the head. If I had paid attention to their behavior prior to the white spots I may be having better luck.

Add 1/4 of the full dose every 2-3 hours. The full dose is anywhere between 1-3 teaspoons per gallon. I am using 2 and I have a clown loach and snails and live plants. Slowly raise the temperature to 86 degrees F. This will speed up the life cycle of the parasite. Continue this treatment for at least a week after the fish stop rubbing their fins.

Oh yea, you should try taking a cup of water out of the tank and dissolve the salt in that stuff. You can then slowly add the salt water to keep the change in salinity to a minimum at any given point.
