so i have a 40 gal. (36" long) tank just sitting here with nothing in it. i'm trying to decide what to get. i'm thinking either a packed house of community fish like barbs and maybe some silver dollars. or some african cichlids. i dont know much of anything about the african cichlids and i was wondering if someone could fill me in. how to decorate the tank, how many fish i could have. i hear they are interesting fish to have, and i'm thinking of giving them a try. i want to have a tank with multiple fish, maybe it isn't big enough, i don't know.

Hey sorry nobody has responded yet but being rude aint gonna help.

Anywho,
With cichlids in a 40 gallon you probably will not be able to take more than about 6 fish, depending on size that is. The best thing to do is to do a species search to find what kind will fit in your tank. Then ask us once you have an idea of some fish you like and we will let you know if they will work together and in your size of tank.

apistos, rams, kribs, any dwarf's. That way you will be able to house a decent amount of fish.

Don't mix too many different kinds of species. They like their PH high and their water hardness high. They LOVE caves-so make sure you have a lot of hiding places. They are VERY territorial-so the hiding places will help with that. They have great personalities! They like to dig as well. My fish are always rearranging the tank. I have a 55 gallon with 12 cichlids and a pleco-so I agree that around 6 would be I good number. Maybe one male and two females of two different types of cichlids. Most of the cichlids are pretty hardy too. Hope this helps.
