I have a 55gal reef tank with a percula, a green carpet anen and varius SPS/LPS corals. My girlfriend thought she'd "surprise" me with a new fish...a maroon clown. She came home and put him in my reef! (god bless her, she knows nothing about the hobby) As expected, they battled for a few hours but then seemed to peacefully coexist. Well, tonight I came home to find both of them hovering over my green carpet. They appear to be hosting, or trying to host! Could this be possible? My percula never paid the anem any mind until tonight. Has anyone ever heard of two diff species of clownfish hosting in the same anen???

I would assume that you will be running into problems. The maroon will most likely come out on top. They are probably engaged in a stand off to see who backs down. Although, it is not UNHEARD OF to have two diff. species coexisting in the same tank, it is unlikely. Good luck.

This is not a good situation. The maroon is one of the more aggressive anemonefish and it will not tolerate other species of anemonefish. I believe you should return the maroon to the lfs and get another percula instead.
I agree that they are probably having a stand-off over the carpet anemone trying to establish territory. The percula is no match for the maroon and may end up dead if both are left in the tank.
Perhaps in a much larger tank they could co-exist (perhaps), but a 55g does not provide enough distance between them for the maroon to forget about the percula being there.
It was a nice thought that your girlfriend had by buying you a new fish, too bad it was the wrong species. Another percula would have been great. Good luck!
