After reading all of these posts about the 'cycling' method, I can see how a newbie to the hobby of fish keeping can easily get confused! SHEESH!! I'm going to post what MY method was and it worked FINE for me, and has been working since I started keeping fish. Here we go:
Week One:
I filled my tank with regular ol' tap water, added gravel, filter, charcoal and ammonia remover. I added one pack of 'cycle' to the filter that I got from the LFS. I left the water unheated and let it sit over night. The next day, off I go to the LFS and purchased 10 'feeder' goldfish. It is my humble opinion that goldfish will flourish in a bowl of crude oil if they had to! The Goldfish immediately began to do their thing, which is to eat and do do. Partial water change on Sunday
Week Two:
Added two spotted Pl*cos to help clean up around the tank. Goldfish are sooo nasty!
Partial water change on Sunday
Week Three:
Added 1 irridescent shark. Partial water change on Sunday
Week Four:
Added 2 Green Terrors Partial water change on Sunday
To date, I have not lost ONE fish, nor do I measure PH in the water or Ammonia levels are any of this other stuff that make fishkeeping seem like ROCKET SCIENCE! Remember, this worked for ME and this is just my humble opinion!
