Rainbows and Tetras

I'm setting up a new 50 gallon tank, and I'm checking out compatiblity of various fish combinations. Will tetras and rainbowfish be compatible in a 50 gallon tank? At this point, there will be at least two clown loaches in it, and maybe a pleco, so there's room for some more fish. Specifically, I'm thinking about
Purple Emperor Tetras (http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_Display.cfm?siteid=21&pCatId=907&topcatid=890) and axelrodi rainbowfish (http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_Display.cfm?pCatId=1050). I would probably get 5-7 of each kind.

I've found some conflicting advice on the net. This site (http://www.fishprofiles.com/interactive/compatibility.asp) and this site (http://www.liveaquaria.com/general/fwcompatibility_chart.cfm) say tetras and rainbows are compatible, but this site (http://www.timstropicals.com/Compatibility/MatchResults.asp) says they aren't.

Anyone with any experience on this? Also, anyone with any experience generally on Purple Emperor Tetras or Axelrodi Rainbows, I'd love to hear what you have to say...

I've had Melanotaenia Splendida Splendida in with tetra and other fish, tho since they grow to about 6" or so I eventually just had the 6 rainbows in the 50g pretty much on their own with a couple of gudgeon. I don't have any at the moment, but plan on maybe getting a couple for the tank if I can fit them in. Might catch a couple in the comming wet season. Tho with the drought over the last few years I haven't seen any Splendida Splendida in the local waterways for a long long time.
