There are a few awesome pieces of driftwood in my backyard that I'd love to make an aquascape with. Problem is, they've been sitting in dirt for a couple of years and are rather soft and nasty. Is there any way I could savage these and make them suitable for an aquarium?

Baking or boiling??

Mine was washed ashore for how long only God knows. It was and is very beautiful and well worth saving, so I powerwashed it, then pickled it in a heavy brine solution for one month.

Just as an aside, it has finally waterlogged and sunk without tiedowns or weights after 20 months of soaking. I guess if I ever do it again, I will go with something other than cedar :idea2:

Fome, is there a way to trim off the soft parts? If you can get it down to hard wood, you should be OK. If it is punky and soft however I would agree with Nick and leave it to rot.

I had a couple pcs I loved that I used. I boiled them, scraped the dead parts off (I spent a lot of time doing the latter). They were good for about 6 or so months. Then parts started getting soft, it started smelling, yuck! So I ditched them. You may have different results since I didn't know what kind of wood I had (it was already water logged and dark).
