Does anyone here know if Malaysian Trumpet Snails are safe to feed my GSP? He's about 2.5 inches, had him for 3 years... I have the opportunity to get about 500 trumpet snails from my friends uncle, but have never had them before and want to be sure. I have heard that they are OK if the puffer is big enough to "bite and chew", but I've also heard that the snail shells are too sharp and can/will cut a puffers mouth... I have been feeding him the tiny common snails that I get for free from the LFS, but it seems I am competing with a few other people to get them first now and I thought this would be an excellent opportunity to get a good, long lasting supply of snails...

They aren't as good a food source. The cone shaped shell is much harder than the round ones, and puffers can break their teeth trying to break them. Most puffers resort to sucking the snail out, leaving the shell intact. This means they get food, but no grinding to keep the beaks down.

A 2.5", you should have a wider source of hard foods available for your puffer to eat. Go to THE PUFFER FORUM & look at the stickys in the BW section.

I don't use MTS for puffer feeding. Their shells are very hard and I had problems with incissor breakage from eating these snails.

Umm RTR I dont think your supposed to eat them! LOL J/K!

But seriously I agree you should probably use a smaller algae eating snail or something along those lines.

LOL! I hope your dental bill wasn't too high!

Yea, just get some of those little snails at your LFS...I get mine from PetSmart for free.
