First I think my 10 Red Eyed Tetras are in the following configuration. I believe I might have gotten 9 males and 1 female. (From the look of it, 9 of them have the same breadth, and the other one is a broader and deeper) with this said I have the following question. I noticed the 9 alleged males will stay in the school; the one alleged female will some times be in the school and some times be on her own. Is this normal? Is she lonely; is sex a factor in socialization of fish like it is sometimes in humans? If so should I take 1 or 2 (or how many) of the males back and get x number of females for her to have company with.

Some times she will go hid under a plant leaf or swimming on her one, other times she will be the in the school.

Or am I just being jump and it just a result of them being in a new envorment, and this will stop as they get accustem to their new home.

Also some times the school will break off into 2 schools.

Have they been in the tank long? After a while tetra can settle down and get so comfortable they don't school at all.

IME the tetra school less and less as they settle in to the tank unless there are fish in the tank that they feel threatened by. Also I wouldn't be surprised to lose a couple anyway. No matter what you do there's always a chance of losing a few new tetra in a tank. Especially neons, but also with some of the others.

Odd that you have that ratio. Maybe one is sick/weak as to inhibit schooling behaviour. Thats a decent sized school so I wouldn't expect probs. Keep an eye on the health of the outcast, the sex ratio you suggest is unlikely. With decent plant /hiding places of some sort it may survive but dont keep your hopes up.
As with most fish more females to males is desireable. How well can you sex the fish? Look for other disease signs carefully.
Also I would be surprised if your LFS would take a few back to trade for a relitivly sexuality ambiguous few more. (highly stocked tanks/unsureof sex etc..)
