Until I make my mind up as to have a planted tank, I was thinking of trying a few less demanding plants. Could I...

1) Throw in some floating plant (watersprite?)
2) Add a piece of driftwood w/java fern growing on it
3) Add a rock w/java moss growing on it

I currently have a 55g community tank that's been established for 2yrs., ph 7.6ish, nitrate 20 ppm, gH 150, temp 76, only .6 watts/gal but plenty of natural light due to 4 skylights and windows (though this is Syracuse -next to last city in the country for #/days of sunshine!!!).

Thanks!

I've got a very similar set up to you beviking and my plants are growing just fine. I've got watersprites as background plants, java fern on the bog wood for mid-ground, and cryptocoryne in the foreground. My only difference is that I have DIY CO2 and I add fertilizer.

And I'm willing to compare number of sunny days between Syracuse and Seattle. :p

Once you go planted, you'll never go back.

Thanks for the replies!
This will be the test run to decide (although I think my mind is already made up!) if I go planted with my 90g.

Bruddah, you must have more light in your aquarium if you're injecting CO2. As for more sunlight????? I think you may be right.:)

Well, I've lived in Western NY and I've lived in Seattle. Seattle is definitely sunnier. Not even a close call.

I thought Seattle had a really nice climate, except for a month or two in the winter when the days get a little too short and gray.

I guess it's a matter of comparison. I moved here from Hawai`i, and the grey winter months are a genuine hardship for me mentally.

Although, I must say that with the current spate of global warming trends we're having many fewer grey days. My thanks to Republican environmenal policies and all you SUV drivers. ;)

The thing that got me worst in Seattle was the shortness of the days in midwinter (oh, say, around now). I didn't realize how much light was beaming down from the leaden skies of western NY during the extra few hours of gray. Of course the nice people up there have never heard of a sunbreak -- it stays gray until it gets too cold for clouds to form, then when it warms up it goes back to gray.

I liked the weather in Seattle for 9 months of the year, and thought the whole rain thing was just an urban legend to scare off Californians. Of course, I've never been to Hawai`i… (one fine day).

Wish I had some sunshine to send your way…

:D

Haven't seen the sun for a month and a half!

Thanks for the clarification carpguy. I'm sooo depressed from living in this "cave" I didn't have the ambition to research which was sunnier. Not really. But had I known Bruddah was from Hawaii, I would have pressed the issue:)
BTW, I think Syracuse receives less sun than western ny- Rochester & Buffalo. I'm going to hang myself now...:(

I went to school south of Rochester. My ex grew up near Oneonta and went to grad school in Binghamton. I know the folks around there like to think of Binghamton as being at the very bottom of the sunny days chart. I used to hear fierce stories about the lake effect from a sister who went to Oswego (near Syracuse, ropes between buildings and what not).

It seems so much more moderate down here by the coast (most of the time).
