my eldest decided to feed the fry yesterday and decided to flick the container as this a good way to do it he says

well as you would expect too much food went into the fry tank and rather than scoop it out he just lowered the tank and let it go into the main tank

i was out christmas shopping

i got back he said he had a problem but all sorted

on closer inspection the tank was smothered in food (powder fry food)

today i have an ammonia reading of 0.5 and the same with nitrites and i have done two 50% back to back waterchanges i tested after the overdose and the levels were fine so i just suctioned off the floating food as i was ill

how big a problem is this what will it do to my tank that was stable

You did what I would do, water changes and water tests. Keep an eye on things for a few days until all is back to normal... you might just have some chubby lil fish ;)

what kind of fish are in the bigger tank? Any small scavengers would have a fun time cleaning the rest of the mess up, and even without any, it seems you took care of it. There's nothing more you really need to do...

Sound slike you did what you could. The ammonia spike probably wouldn't hurt the adults, but the fry might have been damaged some. You may loose a couple or they may pull through but definatley keep you eye on the ammonia levels for the next couple of days.

ammonia and nitrites are back to zero :dance

thanks everyone for reassuring me that i had done the right thing

the fry seem fine but i guess we will see

out of curiosity at what age do fry become fish mine are about four weeks old now
