Hi All
I have been posting about my cycling problems and thanks for all the help and advise!
I have just put in some gunk from a neighbours established tanks filter and I am worried I may have overdone it as the tank is now horribly cloudy!!!
Will this settle or will I have to do yet MORE water changes!!!!!!
Just to put my mind at rest!!!! I have been water changing like a mad woman to get my nitrites under control but two LFS's have told me that I am slowing the cycle down by multiple water changes and that I should only do minimal changes and let the tank establish itself !! Surely that then puts the fish at risk! All I read on here makes me think that water changes cant do any harm as long as I add the dechlorinator and make sure the water is at the same temp and ph as the tank!! I am beginning to think I am going mad with all this conflicting advise but feel quite strongly that its you guys who are the true experts!!!

aww no one replied :(
well I'll try my best to help.
Firstly, what color is the cloudy water. different colors could mean different things. this could be bacterial bloom, algae bloom, or just uneaten food and other junk drifting around...
Your benefitial bacteria lies in the gravel and filter. Changing the water removes ammonia and nitrites, which is the food for the beneficial bacteria. However, if you have excess ammonia and nitrite, you're not significantly slowing the cycle, but it's not a wise idea. (Unless you put fish in before you cycled, in which you should keep up the water changes...)
