plants

hello, im new to the forum, and well to the whole aquaium thing, i bought the aquarium on an impulse buy before i knew anything about it, all i knew was how much i liked it as a kid, and i really do love fish, and my aquarium. heres the thing, ive had the tank for a week, untill 2 nights ago, it was cloudy, and now its been clear sonce. i have one real rock, and a few fake plants, and since i didnt know better at the time, i over stocked the tank, but my real question is, is it still alright to put plants in, and should i do it inbetween my next water change. as of now, i have a few neon tetras, a few jelybean tetras, a moly and a female guppy, i eventually want to get an angel fish, now, what plants should i put in, and how long should i wait to put the plants in, and how long after that to put int he angel fish, oh, its a 10 gallon tank, and i want it to have a few kinda caves, or over hanging cover kinda thing. thanks.

First, have the water tested for ammonia/nitrites--and start doing daily water changes, now. This will reduce the toxins those fish are swimming in, and increase their odds of survival. Read through the stickies and the archived threads on cycling a tank, as well. Do not add any fish until the tank is fully cycled--the ones in there now may very well die, so adding more won't help. Second, before adding any fish, you'll need to do some research--angels will outgrow a 10, and will eat the neons and guppy.

In terms of plants--adding plants will help. But--you have to have enough light to support them, so post what you have. Some plants will be okay even with very low levels of light.
