There is a tiny bit of info on the web about the use of pumice as the biological media in a canister filter. However much of what I read is from New Zeland and the chemical composition is very different.

Anyway has anyone used pumice?

I am thinking of the raw stuff you buy at the garden center, not the "aquarium" packaged stuff with the 1000% mark up. Our locally mined pumice is low in silica and metals and is only $5 (Canadian) for 15 litres. My current thinking is to boil it for a couple of hours to leach out anything. (I can't imagine the "aquarium" version is processed or sourced any better).

I think your local pumice would be fine. Just test it with an acid to see if it bubbles.

I would put some in a bucket with your tank water and put an airstone and leave it overnight, check the ph, gh, kh after that.
