I have a small 2.5 gallon in my daughter's room. I have a overflow type filter in it now like a whisper. But I think it is rated more for at 10g. She has gold fish in it now, but I am planning on getting rid of them and giving her some of my guppy males that I need to remove from my tank. Too many males for the few females. I plan to drop a few of the fry in there for her too. So I am worried that the filter is too strong for the tank and will suck up any fry that I put in. Thanks for any help.

Hmmmm. you could get a new filter but I think your problem would best be solved by getting a "cover" for the intake. a small sponge that goes over the inlet will spread out the suction over a larger area and prevent the fry from getting sucked up. This is probably the best way without buying that new smaller filter. you could also get a kit to extend the inlet to below the substrate, but at that point a new filter would probably be the same price

I have a long plastic piece that extends down into the gravel. But, I am concerned that the fry would just suck through the vents in the filter cap. I was thinking about the foam, sponge, or whatever . But thanks for your response.

When in doubt, use panty hose!! :-)

I used to have a guppy tank many years ago. When I noticed babies in the tank, I immediately knew they'd get sucked right thorough that filter end-cap, so I took an old pair of nylons, cut out a circle and rubberbanded it over the filter intake.

It may not be pretty, but it worked! So stick a plant in front of it...

:-)

Yeah that may be ugly. Buut would work no doubt. May end up trying that. Thanks

This is what I use on a 2.5 gallon. I had to put panty hose over the intake because it was sucking my bettas fins in it.

Why not just get a 5 gallon tank. Not too much bigger and you could use the filter as is (I use the smallest whisper on a 5 gallon with no problem). It would be a much better home for the guppies and will probably cost pretty much the same as a new filter. A desk lamp will provide sufficient lighting and glass tops are cheap as well.

I agree get a 5 gallon. I got a kit from wal-mart for $30.00. Everything but the heater and gravel is included. It even comes with a fluorescent hood.

Whisper makes a great little filter that sits inside the tank. Its pretty nice, I have it on all my tiny tanks.

Whisper® In-Tank PF-10i

For the ultimate in convenience and quiet, choose a Whisper® In-Tank Filter. These filters mount on the inside of the aquarium, rather than hanging from the outside -- making it possible to place the tank flush against a wall. In-Tank Filters are unusually quiet, since the motor is under the water. Offering the same quality and performance as an external filter, the Whisper® In-Tank Filter will function in as little as 2 inches of water -- making it ideal for turtle tanks, or for creating a waterfall inside the tank.

The Whisper® In-Tank filter features adjusts easily to high or low water levels with mounting suction cups and/or bracket. Each filter comes with one pre-assembled Whisper® Bio-Bag® filter cartridge.
