Shale

I was looking for slate for my tank in which to make a rock wall.
I think what I got is shale. Is shale ok for the tank? How can I
tell?

Not to hijack thread, Punch, but I read your signature haiku with interest. Why not ask him what he'd like in a tank? I got a 55g in my bedroom by giving my wife what she wants: it had 85 neons, but I've converted and now it will house cardinals and emperors. Otherwise I was going to have to move it...

punch, shale converts to slate under geological heat and pressure. It's fine. What you're avoiding in general are carbonate rocks (limestone etc) that would raise the pH.

Give your husband his own 55 for his birthday-- you just missed Christmas! Tell him you'll set it up for him any way he likes. Really follow through on this-- just be the enabler-- you buy him the tank and the fish of his choice: he buys the"other stuff"-- filter etc.

I'd upgrade existing tank to 75(or larger :D ) and give him 55G.

As for the tank, I've got now is a 65 AND only a couple months old
I can't go larger at the moment and if I started looking around
for a bigger tank he'd have a fit. but maybe I'll get him is own little tank. Only problem with that is I'll be the one to clean it:(

Yeah, that's the idea right? Force him kicking and screaming into getting a 29 gal planted bowfront tank high light tank with co2 by making him want one and asking you for it.
