So my 46 bowfront has algae, pretty bad. I am not sure what kind it is, or how to figure out what kind it is. I tried a blackout already, but it didn't work. The only thing that has gotten rid of it is the chemical stuff. But that ended up killing off the biological filter and my tank crashed, killing about half my fish. What can i do to get rid of this dreaded algae? :(

I only have a 20-gallon, jujubee, but I had developed a lot of algae lately too. I went out last week and bought two otos and I have to say, my tank looks great now!!! And they are very active fish - fun to watch. They crack me up. I don't know if you have room for more, but they sure did the trick for me!

i have tried ottos before, doesn't work. I mean it reduces it a little bit, but not completly. But when the tank crashed I lost all of them (4 total). I don't have enough lighting to do live plants yet, so it looks like lots of water changes and scraping the glass. any other input is appreciated also.

you said you dont have enough lighting, is the lighting evened out? or is it all on one side? maybe that has something to do with it, maybe get some snails? and a few algea eaters, also, everybody gets some algea, you could scrape it off, but if its ridiculous. Id say maybe do more water changes, also, what colour background do you have? and what colour gravel do you have? if its brownish or greenish coloured (either one) it will cause an assload of access algea. Also, do you vacuum your gravel? it might be a result of too much crap and stuff building up in it. and Maybe you should reduce your feeding, how often do you feed? to much food can cause algea.

I hope that helped. Try pouring in some aquaplus, i dont know if it helps fight algea but it never hurts, eheheh.
