I am starting a communtity tank (10g) with a platy trio (1 male, 2 females) and a dwarf gourami, and after some algae appears, 1-2 otos.

I was just looking for suggestions on what colors of platies I should get that would look nice with a neon blue DG. Thanks!

PS. If you have pictures, it would be great!

high finned platies

i would say 3 red high finned platies but there slightly more expensive or if not just some red platies

what do you mean by algae appears ?

if you mean catfish

flying fox or corys

my first com tank was a 12g i had

5 red high finned platies 2male-3female
1male and 1 female dwarf gourami
2 corys(catfish)
and 5 neons

the tank was really nice well planted out but in 2 months the tank had become slightly(but not by much all fidsh were still happy) overstocked will a few surviving platy fry (most of the fry get eaten)

ooo cool by algae appears i mean after algae starts to grow when the tank is more "aged" the high Finned red platy is pretty. I was thinking of a male sunset platy, a female mickey mouse platy and a female blue spotted platy. How does that sound?

sounds cool

algae can take for a week-a whole year to form in a tank the more light the more algae

i ut my tank lights on timers the tank goes on a 12.30 noon and goes of at 10.30 pm and i hardly ever get algae

when i first started out i use to turn the tank lights on mannualy at 8am and turn them of when i went to bed from 10pm-1am
i was forever scraping algae out the tank

but in some tanks in can look good when controled eg pirhana breeders tend to just clean the front glass and let the algae gorw on the others the same with rocks but it is controled

personly i would forget the otos and have some zebra danios or neons

is the tank well planted? any pics?

im 13 too!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i knew there would not be many but no ive found 2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i have a big com tank set up in my livin room its a 75g in it r
6clownloach (10cm)
4 discus (15cm)
4 angel fish (8cm)

people say that it isnt a com tank but it is a com tank is when you house to different species of fish

do you agree with me?

yeah, definetly. I am too imbarrased of my tank to show any pics. Its way too overpopulated, and I am in the redesign process. There are boring goldfish in it, and various fake marine rocks that my mom unknowingly bought last year when she bought the tank. I truly hate them, but I dont have the heart to tell her. When my tank is the way I want, I will show you pics.

Oh, and I forgot, I personally HATE zebra danios and neons. Sorry to everyone who has them and is happy with them, they just are so boring. I was thinking of having 1 dwarf gourami, and 3 platy, knowing they will breed like crazy, I'm only having 4 fish to start.

I personally would get three of the same color platys, and just pick the one that you like the best. if you get more than one color variety the offspring will be a mix and could be interesting or could be ugly without much color. you never know...

you could look at aquabid to see the colors and varieties available befor going to pick yours out from the store. that way you might have an idea of what you want or help you decide which ones you see are the best fish color wise. the fish you see on aquabid are often the best possible lines so don't expect the store fish to be up to those standards but it helps to know what is possible.

:OT: This is completely off topic, but SnakeIce, how big is the tank you keep the angel on your avavtar (I'm assuming its yours) That angel is GORGEOUS!! I would never keep one in a 10g, but that is pretty, and I want to look into a tank big enough for a nice angel. :OT:

that is a 20 gallon tank :)

I picked him for the fact that he had halfway decent fins, not all twisted up, and the color was a patern I like. there are some of the colors that while its interesting that they exist its not in my opinion of what is a good looking angel.

he is very shy to other fish and strange people, when I got him he was so thin I thought he wouldn't make it. his belly and back bone all stuck out then but he started eating and hasn't looked back since :)
