Hello everyone!

I got/setup a 55g this Christmas which is in the process of its first nitrogen cycle. During the last few days ammonia and nitrites have been showing up very high on my test strips. Today ammonia is showing up very low while nitrites are still high. Nitrates were shown in the safe level. From what I have read about the cycle, I am assuming I am nearing the completion of the first phase in which nitrites are forming and ammonia is dropping off. I am expecting to see nitrates pick up now an nitrites begin to drop off as well as the ammonia staying low. Is that a correct assumption? Also once the total cycle completes, how often should I be changing water and does a new cycle begin with each water change? I have done 4 - 20% changes since christams now.

Thanks for your help in advance. This fourm has been a hugh help so far!!!

Yes, that is correct on how the cycle works. If you are doing a fishless cycle you shouldn't be changing any water until the cycle completes. If you have fish you should be doing tons of water changes to get the ammonia and nitrite as low as possible. Once your cycle is done you can do water changes once a week. I do 50% a week and it works great.
