View Full Version : CAn I do this with a salinity checker?
Can I check my freshwater tanks and make sure I am maintaining a tablespoon of salt/10 gallons? What would it read on one of those salinity checkers?

1spoon per 10gallons?
i would say no.
i don't think that's gonna give a reading on a hydrometer.
Some hydrometers have a range starting at 1.0. Wouldn't that be able to detect the low concentrations that Gebo's looking for? Also, some people believe the glass tube-type hydrometers are more accurate.

Well if you're referring to hobbiest hydrometers for marine tanks, then you prolly won't get any reading at all for the amount of salt being added. Just to get to the 1.001 low mark, you need about 1/2 cup of salt per 5 gallons of water. I used this concentration for our molly tanks at work, and the usual reading was 1.005.
I don't even think my refractometer goes much lower than that.
