Florish Excel

Is it a good idea to add some florish excle to my low light (1.5wpg) planted tank? I have a bottle from the boxing day sale. I have a few plants in a Eco-complete gravel bed.

I have a 72 gallon with live plants and about 1.8 watts per gallon. I use the product, and it has been excellent in my experience with it. It killed a lot of my hair algae and is slightly benefiting my plants using it daily!

Just make sure not to overdose and it will be good. It will help your plants use the amount of food better int he tank and the available light, thus helping your tank's plants outcompete the algae. So it shoudl reduce algae. Of course an overdose could lead to greater algae growth.

I started using flourish excel a couple months ago. I was in lfs and said what the hell I already use Co2 and have adequate lighting. I just figured for 6 bucks why not try it. The major thing i noticed was the reduction in hair algae besides that it is hard to tell because the plants were in good condition to start with. It would be interesting to hear someone that setup two identical tanks one with excel and one with Co2.

I don't think taht excel is as good as CO2. It is just simpler to establish. The carbon in liquid form apparently isn't as easy for plants to use as in gas form. But it is still a far cry from using no extra carbon source. It is also very useful for people that have low water hardness (like I do) as with compressed CO2 you will need to add buffering capacity to your tank or else it will have a pH crash.
