i know sand tends to cloud water when it is added. however, a friend of mine is going to give me a small amount of his sand substrate to help with my cycle (which seems to be almost done with it's mini-cycle, i used biospira). can i just add it to my gravel, or do i need to float it in some of my fiancee's pantyhose? (she just loves this whole aquarium idea...)

I sprinkled sand over the substrate of my new tank, to seed it. No problem. Just hold the container low over the substrate and pour slowly. Run your filter at max or if you can cause some disturbance by lowering your water level or raising the spray bar if there is any cloudiness. It doesn't last long and should clear up within an hour or 2.
