Ammonia

Mindy, here in Canada you can buy ammonia where you would normally buy cleaning supplies, usually in the same aisle as bleach and windex. The ammonia should be clear, and when you shake the bottle it should not foam excessively.

Usually generic or store brands are your best bet. If it has detergents, dyes or perfumes added, avoid it. Chelating agents are OK.

Hey Mindy, when you get your hands on some ammonia, tell us what % concentration it is and how big your tank is, and we will let you know how much to put in to get you close to the proper concentration.

No luck returning the fish, and they all died. My son wasn't upset with any of them dying except his algae eater, or "algae liter" as he calls it. I had them in the tank for 2 weeks, and for the last week with the 3 that were left, I was doing water changes daily. I'm am going to start cycling the tank this weekend. How long does it take to do a fishy cycle, I am NOT going to do one, just curious though. Since I had the fish 2 weeks, would it be possible to just add ammonia to the water already in the tank, would that speed up the process any? I have a 5 gallon tank. I am also going to get fish from my dad when it is cycled. He has a pair of guppies that have had about 8 babies in the last 5 months, so he is going to give them to my son for our tank.

It would probably take at least half again as long to cyclce without adding additional ammonia, IMO. Yes, I think it might be a good idea to use the existing water in the tank as it is already de-chlorinated and has the benefit of a good infusion of beneficial bacteria from your . :sad . fishes.Mindy said:

My mom and dads guppies have already had like 8 or 9 babies in the last 4-5 months. How many should I have in my tank?
I haven't gotten the ammonia or testing kit yet, I was going to get it today, but I've been lazy today and decided that I don't even want to get out. I will probably go tomorrow and get everything. I will email with the ammonia results and with what type I get. Tanks for the help.

Less fish = less mess, less maintenance and less chance of disease. I think about 6 as a maximum for a 5 gallon. If you stick a plant in the gravel, it helps too. I'll dig up the name of a low-light one if you are interested.
