Anyone familiar with reversing a Aquaclear 402 Powerhead?

I have reversed the flow to create RUGF, my question is how do I prefilter the powerhead?

IMHO & IME, AquaClears are great pumps in conventional flow. In the reversed flow format, their output is pathetic - a huge waste of money and power.

Check out Penguin 1140 or 660 powerheads, they have an inexpensive RFUG kit available with prefilter - the powerhead still functions at near-normal rates with some small reduction in flow from the prefilter.

I agree with RTR. I have purchased both powerheads and the Reverse Flow Kit for the Penguin is a great setup. The prefilter is also large enough to not clog quickly as many DIY prefilter setups do. The water intake is spread over about eight inches of prefilter!

Thank you for your replies.

I received a couple of the AC402 heads with my tank. I will look to upgrade in the not to distant future.

In the mean time how do you prefilter a reversed 402?

Thanks in advance.
