I started cycling my 5 gallon just under 2 weeks ago in preparation for some least killifish. I put a decorative cave rock from a newly completely cycled tank and old water from the cycled tank that was high in ammonia due to some rotting plant debris. I think I changed the water once. I put fish food into the empty tank to ensure a buildup of ammonia. I have been letting the filter run.

I want to move the little guys from thier gallon home to this 5 gallon tank. After a 50% water change I thought the 5 gallon would be suitable, but the change barely effected the ammonia- 4ppm. nitrates are 0.

Should I do a complete water change, add the fish and change water daily or just do smaller water changes, use ammolock, and wait until the tank cycles? I have never done a fishless cycle -I have had the fish and then delt with the water to keep it healthy for them.

Some people who have these fish don't even use a filter, just frequent water changes. Point is it isn't a poopy fish and it seems pretty hardy.

thanks
Lisa

never mind, I did a water change , got the water the same as the water they were kept in before tank, and put them in. they are investigating their new home.

Make sure to keep checking on the ammonia and nitrite levels. Daily water changes for at least the first week will do wonders for the fish and shouldn't be too hard with a 5 gallon tank.
