Cycling 8 Gal tank...what fish?

Hello folks I'm having a little trouble deciding what kind/how many fish to use for cycling my new 8 gallon. I think I've got it narrowed down to either a Betta, a platy, or one of each...?? Is two fish too many? Any opinions on this are requested. Thank you!

p.s. any thoughts on whether to start with plants right away? my tank has an 11 watt flourescent bulb.

A few platys will be fine, there are many different types of platys to choose from too.

You should consider doing a fishless cycle.

I wouldn't recommend putting a platy with a betta. If you do choose to go with the platys, make sure they are of the same sex, they are live bearers and eventually you will have a lot more fish than you bargained for!

You should look into fishless cycling. It saves stress, and fish.
