(Can't accuse the wetman of using a Teaser Topic Heading eh.)
So the old lady especially has senior moments when her attention drifts and she stands exactly head-down in the water. Ten or fifteen seconds. Then something catches her eye and she's back in the swim. I think I know how this is...
...Oh yes. This ol' babe is over six years old. She's not losing control of her swimming balance. She's been fed greens all her life, "out the yin-yang" as people like to put it-- quite literally sometimes-- and she has the high-arched back of an old Tiger Barb and a deep fully belly to match (not bloated). She's healthy. No parasite history.
Her "mate" the other last one of my old Tiger Barbs (six is pretty decent age no?) still begs for a Quickie. She tolerates him but she's glad the tank has some youngsters to distract him.
When nitrates rise, Tiger Barbs can tip down like this. Have you noticed? But nitrates in her planted tank are ~10-15ppm. Can't be that.
Could it be a reaction to low pH, down around 6.6-6.8?
Do you know this action, and do you connect it with something, in your experience?
