hello all...

i was at walt-mart today looking for daylight bulb for my 10 gal tank.. i want to start plant keeping. i have read somewhere on this forum that ideal light is 6500K - up .

at waltmart i spent 1hr looking at the sprial flourent bulb and difference bulb. none of the bulb have kelvin rating on them.. they only have lumens rating that all...

question is how do u tell what the kelvin rating is??????????

any reply is greatly thanx

You would have to contact the manufacturer of the bulb.

As I have found out, the actual Kelvin doesn't do much more than give you a pleasing look. A 6500K bulb is very blue compared to the bulbs you normally look at, but appears more daylight in colour. Some people use 10,000 K bulbs, that appear almost stark white.

Many fo the spiral bulbs are actaully 3500K (the ones I use are) and some go as high as 5000K. They all seem to work well on planted tanks as an alternative to incandescent, but are not as good as tubes. My 3500K bulbs help my amazon sword and java fern and java moss grow like weeds but have a much yellower colour than my "daylight" tube in another tank.
