I've had my 8 gallon running for a week now, contains 1 betta as of Saturday. Unfortunately, my water test kit hasn't arrived yet via mail-order so I have no idea what the levels are... I love my new little fishy and want to keep him healthy, but also want to keep the cycling process moving along. Is it too soon to change some of the water??
Thanks,
Alicia

Since you are fishy cycling, I would be changing water every day. The beneficial bacteria grow in the filter media and on rocks, plants, decorations and substrate, but not in the water column. Changing the water can only help your fish and not set your cycle back. Please change the water.

Yes, do change the water. As long as there is any amount of ammonia and nitrite present the cycle will continue, it doesn't need that much to grow bacteria. I agree a partial daily water change (20-30%) will do until you get your test kits.

Ok!!!

Water changes, coming right up! I hope I wasn't wrong in assuming that bettas can put up with just about anything (they're certainly subjected to "much" in the pet trade)... well, thanks very much for the advice--Alicia

Well, they are tough fish, but ammonia and nitrite levels are harmful to them, just as they are to other fish.
