i am starting a new saltwater tank in a 20gallon long,,im using a damsel lava rock and reef rock to cycle the tank is this a good idea? after learning of this site i see that people are using live rock instead,,also i have been using a chemical called cycle that is suppose to speed up the wait period on new tanks i have been testing my water regularly and so far everything is still in the green nothing has changed the water is 13days old what should i be looking for?

Filter undergravel
powerhead@ 170gallons an hour
temp 78degrees

I think that we'll need just a little more info. One did you does your tank with either amonia or some organic material like shrimp or fish to start a cycle? Most of the time uncured live rock will have enough organic material rotting away to start a cycle . I've never heard of the damsel rock and the reef rock could be lots of things. In short though your watter will stay perfect unless you add some source of ammonia to start your cycle. I'd use some sort of deli shrimp, a small peace of raw fish etc .
