Im sure its been asked a million times, but how do you know how much to feed your fish. I currently have 11 neons, 3 Gouramis, 4 Pictus Cats, 4 corys, and a Pleco in a 55G tank. I am feeding flake food twice a day and 1 algee pelet a day but am wondering how much I should be giving them. I have read to only feed enough so that there are no leftovers hitting the bottom, but thats were the corys and the pictus tend to feed. Only the Gouramis will go to the surface to eat and the neons only eat once the food hit the middle of the tank. I am assuming everyone is getting enough to eat and the Pictus have not eaten any neons so I am wondering if I am overfeeding or how could even tell.

Also what would be a good alternative to flakes for these types of fish?

Thanks for you help.

I feed my fish twice a day and I try to feed them only what will be eaten in 2 to 5 mins. I don't worry about flakes sinking to the bottom because I have a single cory which takes care of that. For other foods you can try some live foods like brine shrimp.

If your tank begins to have excess algea, then you are probably overfeeding. You could also do an ammonia test to see if you are overfeeding. I have some neons and a gourami in my 10 gallon, and my neons feed off the top. I've never heard of them feeding in the middle. Intresting. lol :) Good Luck!

Yeah I think my neons try to stay out of the way of the Gouramis! I have read on a few sites that Gouramis are sometimes last to eat and you have to make sure there is enough left for them. Not the case with mine! They charge up there like a couple of bulls!

^^^ Exactly, and if its worms or brine shrimp i add 1 at a time, and when one goes in that knowbody eats i stop, simple.

My neons are the ones who charge to the top like a couple of bulls! Lol :)
I have to make sure that there is enough food left over for my gourami, but it could just be that since my gourami is new to my tank, he could still be getting use to the schedule.
