Hi to all you lamp gurus, I need some advice.
I don't like paying wads of cash for some cf bulbs that I need to replace 8-12 months.
could you list what ballast and bulb combo you use?
I understand that u can only OD with electronic ballasts and usually u connect both outputs
of a 2 lamp ballast to the same tube right? is it possible to use a completely different ballast designed to drive a T12 34w bulb to drive a small T8 tube and get more light? I currently have a 10g and want to boost light levels. In the future I will be getting bigger tanks and also want to overdrive the longer bulbs. There are so many ballasts outthere and I want to figure out a way to overdrive with the least expense in ballasts and get good light output and not burn out the bulbs. Thanks for your help, the more responses the better.

I don't even know the name of the ballasts. They came out of the $7 shoplight from the local hardware store. I use a 2 48" bulb ballast to drive 2 24" bulbs over a 20gal tank, and I use 2 ballasts -4bulb (48")each- to drive 4 48" bulbs over my 90gal. They were listed for use with T12 or T8's. I use Zoomeds T8 bulbs. You can't get more light w/o excpecting a shorter bulb life.
The ballast usually (always that I've encountered) has a diagram on it so you simply connect like wires (both reds, both blues, etc) that would go to two bulbs, to one bulb.

Some type of electronic ballasts that have been recommended

Sylvania Quicktronic QT4X32/120 LP:
Advance REL-4P32-SC

I believe that there is a Fulham ballast as well, but I'm not sure of the specifics
