Just getting back into the hobby

So last week we cleaned out the garage and had the wonderful idea of pulling a 30 long out of storage and running it again. I thought about maybe a breeding pair of convicts for something fun.

At this point all is well.

Yesterday I went to the LFS with my fiance and she saw puffers. She fell in love. I know, wrong forum. The thirty long is now to be converted to brackish and somehow I get no cichlids. I was on the fence. I really want some southies again. So she suggested I get a bigger tank and put in some south americans for myself and let her run the brackish tank. No problem.

Today I am the happy owner of a shiny new 115g and I am now faced with a dilemma. What to put in here?

Tank is not up. Equipment is ordered. So far:
2 300 watt heaters (visitherm)
1 Rena xp3
1 fluval 404
lights


How am I on filtration here? I have never done more than a 55 before. I plan on running the canisters with sponges and ceramic rings and floss and such.

What can I reasonably put in here?

I am a fan of the more common stuff; ie jacks, firemouths, cons, jewels, ...

any combo thereof...

any suggestions?

It has been two years since I have run a tank (planted), and five years since doing cichlids.

i think that filtration will be fine. i am running just the XP3 on my 90 gallon and the water it moves is insane. i had to turn it down because it was pushing the sand away from the glass... on the opposite side of the tank from the output! will definately be enough for the 115, plus the Fluval and i'd say your set.

but the fish? i know i will get yelled at for this... but your SUUURE you wanna do SA? :D what about some spanky AFRICANS! woo woo woo

You could do a huge biotope community aquarium with various dwarf cichilids, with tetras plecos and other fish, or you could Do a big breeding tank full of several pairs of discus
 
FYI there are FW puffers, Tetradon lierius (sp?) is the "red-eye" I have. (Never go with the common name, as there are 3 different species commonly known as red eye) Tere is also the Tetraodon biocellatus (comm. name is fig-8) or Tetraodon fluviatilis (comm. is green spot) Who are ok in FW. While they are african or aisian, they are arround neutral ph and can live with your cons or other SA's, just make sure the puffer is MUCH smaller than the other fish in there. They will want a good place to hide and do need a diet containing hard shelled foods, as thier teeth grow constantly (like a rodent)
 
You have a few options, what are the fish that you absolutely adore? Post all of them and I'm sure someone here can help you find the right combo for your tank :).
 
I just sort of want to go with the commonly available stuff, like I mentioned, jack dempseys (love those), convicts, firemouths, and a wildcard, either carpintes or jewels.

I just have a question on quantities, bearing in mind the adult size of these fish.

The discus idea is interesting, I have the CO2 rig. I would just need some mongo lights for the plants.
