Got a Water Hyacinth the other day but because of those huge airsacks on it's stalks the little bugger wont stay buried in the soil. It just shoots straight up to the surface soon as you take your hand of it.
Does anyone know a good way to weigh it down? Is it lead that is best used in aquariums for this sort of thing.

Cheers

Water hyacinth is a floating plant, it does not live under the water but floating on the surface.

Hehe. Yep. It's a floating species that is meant to float across the water surface.:D

Its scientific name is Eichhornia crassipes and is considered an invasive species (several other aquarium plants are too...don't be worried you got some monster plant). Just don't go dumping it outside into water ways or there'll be trouble :soda:

I saw some furniture recently made from hyacinth, apparently someone has found a way to make use of the durn things! Now they are making rattan-looking chairs and coffee tables out of them.

Bugger! It looks so stoopid just hanging there with all it's roots dangling in the tank. Do you think I'd tick it off royally by weighing it down and rooting it in. It'll have to go otherwise...

it would probably only make itself more boyant if you got it to temporarily stick to the bottom.

trying to plant that on the bottom is like trying to sink a balloon with air in it, only the plant has the ability to make more air in the balloon if it isn't floating.

Cloud, I just read your tank specs - can you post a picture of your bristlenose? I just mentioned to my husband that you've got a pleco 'small enough to sit on an algae wafer' and we'd both love to see a pic of that! :)

I've taken it out now. It's in a vase by my window. Will have do do a re-think for the centre piece.

Blinky, I'll take a shot soon as I can borrow a camera. It's a little larger now though. It's tail dangles off by about 1/2cm. Still a titch though!
