I want a 4 inch sand base in my 55 gallon. I can't afford to get all live sand, so I'm going to go with as much dead sand as I can.

How many pounds of dead sand and live sand to make that base? What is a good ratio of dead to live? I like the look of very fine grained sand better than the crushed coral.

Thanks for your replies!

you only need a handful or two of live sand to kick off your sand bed.

Cool, about 120 pounds should do it.

Delta, I got 3 - 50lb bags of play sand and I used less than 2 of em to get 4-5" in my 55... There is a GREAT atricle by Monty (Fish Whisperer if ya don't know him...) about how to seed yer DSB with great results... Dale has the link I believe.... Ohhhhhhh Dale?

Just to comapir your results.

Different calculators use different weights per square inch for their sand. Some calculate wet sand weight and some calculate dry sand weight.
