Bulbs should be replace at a max of a year this way the intensity will stay high. I had mine just over a year and changed it, there was nothing different that I noticed, but everyplace I read or anyone I talk to says 10-12 mths.
I think that planted tanks change more often.
You won't notice to much visible difference to the eye. But if you checked with a light meter there is quite a drastic fall-off in output in older flourescent bulbs. A good way to check this is use your camera, if you have one with a light meter that is.
