So I ordered some flake for my rainbows from Big Al's. I wasn't thinking when I ordered it what Seven ounces of flake would mean. So now I have this giant cannister- what's the best way to preserve the nutrients?

I'm thinking about pulling out a small amount into a small tupperware container, and then freezing the rest of it.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

You wont loose much if you keep the lid on all the time, apart from when your feeding, its air tight, well should be, and if it has tinfoil underneath only peel it of so you can get your fingers in.

But doesn't flake just lose nutrient value over time? It's just a 50 gallon tank, I feed lightly, and I alternate the flake with freeze dried bloodworms, brine shrimp, and those tetra crisp things that my fish love, so given all that, I could still be using up this flake in 2013.

At what point does fish food just get too old? In the past, I've always tried to buy small amounts of things, figuring it would lose nutrient value over time.

Alternatively, anybody in the Bay Area want some rainbow flake? I have some extra to share...
