When do you use the extension?

I just got 4 Emperor 400's. When do I use the intake extensions? How far down in the water do I want my intake screen to be? 2 inches from the bottom? 4 inches? I have two 24 inch tall tanks and was wondering what any of you do? How deep should I go without making a fecal vacuum cleaner? Do any of you even use them?

I always put my intakes at least half the depth of the tank but prefer about 75%. This ensures a good mix of water top to bottom to distribute oxygen, even out temperature, and create a nice flow of water. If I have two on one tank, one is set higher the other lower. Again for all the above reasons.

So with 2, you would go 50% down and 75% down, correct?

If it were me yes, but that is just me. Others may have other ideas here. That said though that is how I do it.
